ATLANTA – While one lucky ticket in Maryland hit the $730 million jackpot Wednesday, Georgia’s students and Georgia Lottery players scored a huge win.
Since the jackpot began rolling Sept. 18, Powerball generated approximately $23.5 million for the lottery-funded HOPE Scholarship and Pre-K programs.
In addition, Georgia Lottery players won more than $10.7 million in prizes.
In January alone, Georgia produced five $1 million winners, two $100,000 winners and 14 $50,000 winners.
The $1 million tickets were sold in Alpharetta, Columbus, Greensboro, Lithonia and Roswell, and the two $100,000 tickets were purchased in Ellenwood and West Point.
The $10,000 tickets were purchased in: Athens, Dahlonega, Jefferson, Kennesaw, Lithonia, McDonough, Marietta, Martinez, Newnan, Roswell, Savannah, Statesboro, Stone Mountain and Toccoa.
Powerball winners have 180 days from the draw date to claim prizes.
Wednesday’s Powerball jackpot is an estimated $20 million to a single annuity winner.
As with all other Georgia Lottery games, proceeds from Powerball will benefit education in the state of Georgia.
Since its first year, the Georgia Lottery Corp. has returned more than $22.7 billion to the state of Georgia for education. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program. More than 1.9 million students have received HOPE, and more than 1.6 million 4-year-olds have attended the statewide, voluntary prekindergarten program.
